Integrated frequency synthesizer for satellite
communications presented at ESA workshop in Noordwijk
An integrated fractional-N synthesizer for satellite communications was presented at ESA Workshop on Advanced Flexible Telecom Payloads, November 2008. The work is a result of a joint effort between Kayser-Threde GmbH, IMST GmbH, IHP GmbH, Saab Space, and the European Space Agency (ESA/ESTEC). The single-chip design was manufactured in IHP’s low-cost SiGe BiCMOS process named SGB25V_TM1TM2. The goal of this project is a flexible Local Oscillator (LO), which is reconfigurable in orbit when setting the frequency to any value between 8.3 and 11.9 GHz by a ground tele-command. The wide tuning range at low phase noise is achieved by combining digital band selection with analogue dual-loop tuning. As a result, the phase noise performance is robust against temperature variations and ageing.
