Evaluation of Approaches to Integrate Multi-Module Security Systems in Wireless Sensor Networks

Security configuration of standard systems is a tedious and error prone task. Doing this for WSN is even more complex due to the scarce resources of the sensor nodes. In order to simplify this task we proposed a middleware architecture. The main idea is that a configuration tool selects security providing modules such as appropriate cipher means. The choice is based on a detailed description of security needs of the application under development as well as on the description of the available security modules and sensor nodes. The task of the thesis is to:

• Develop and integrate an appropriate XML based description language that describes available sensors, software modules and application requirements with emphasis on the security properties
• Design and evaluation of algorithms to find configurations that satisfy a given application description considering
  • different security classes (concealment, integrity, robustness)
  • security strengths
  • needed resources and expected energy consumption
