Aspects of Optimal Quantization in Communications

Abstract: Digital communications systems do typically require analog-to-digital conversion at the receiver. The data rate that can be achieved at maximum is not only affected by the sampling frequency and quantization resolution of the analog-to-digital conversion but also by the actual quantization characteristic. This work discusses the design of optimal quantization characteristics allowing for maximum data rate from an information-theoretic perspective.
