IHP contributes with two DFG projects in Priority Program ESSENCE SPP1857

IHP takes part in the priority programm ESSENCE in the projects "Hochempfindlicher und hochspezifischer Atemgassensorbasierend auf Molekülspektroskopie im Millimeterwellenlängenbereich" and "Integrierte Lab-on-Chip Terahertz-Spektroskopie-Plattform in BiCMOS Technologie" (THz-LoC)

IHP contributes with two DFG projects in Priority Program ESSENCE. The Programs goal is to establish interdisciplinary research concerning sensors using electromagnetic fields to detect and analyze matter of interest. The main focus here is life science. Research fields are biomolecules, cells, tissues and organs or other parts of the body of animals or humans in biology and medicine as well as materials, chemical substances and mixtures of it in pharmacology, food chemistry, agricultural engineering, environmental analysis and monitoring.

 

"Integrierte Lab-on-Chip Terahertz-Spektroskopie-Plattform in BiCMOS Technologie" (THz-LoC) project is targeting the world wide first demonstration of an ultra-wideband fully integrated microfluidic platform including Terahertz spectroscopy sensors for future innovative Lab-On-Chip applications. The intended target platform will be realized in a single economic, downmarket compatible SiGe BiCMOS technology. The strategy is to combine complex vector network analyzer circuits working at 240-500 GHz with new integration methods of microfluidic channels in Silicon. The demonstrator platform enables the investigation of interaction between biological cells and electromagnetic waves in the sub-millimeter wave region.  

 

The second project "Hochempfindlicher und hochspezifischer Atemgassensorbasierend auf Molekülspektroskopie im Millimeterwellenlängenbereich" covers one part of the fundamental research within the program ESSENCE dealing with molecular biology and toxicology. This topic is highly socially and economically relevant since it bears the potential of improving quality of living by providing faster, more accurate and easy to use analysis and diagnosis methods. Moreover, it offers the opportunity of new therapy approaches.
