100 Gbit/s Carrier-Grade Ethernet Transport Technologies

The Objective

The main goal of 100GET is to develop carrier-grade transport networks based on a data transmission rate of 100 billion bits per second over Ethernet at high quality. 100GET is a European project under the CELTIC Cluster Programme.

IHP’s Contribution

IHP is participating in the 100GET-E3 subproject of 100GET as a partner of CoreOptics (CO). IHP and CO will provide a demonstrator for the physical (PHY) layer using 130nm and 250nmIHP semiconductor technologies which can be used by the other 100GET partners. Further, IHP contributes in research by developing innovative solutions to make 100GET feasible at low power consumption, particularly by developing a mixed analog/digital signal processor (ADSP) and by searching for new PHY transfer concepts. The ADSP is intended to reduce the power dissipation of the data processing by an order of magnitude [1]. This also includes the development of the required data converters. The huge data throughput of the processing of about 448 Gb/s will be managed by a mix of high-speed bipolar ECL/CML and CMOS circuits. First steps towards automatic ECL/CML synthesis are involved [2].


100GET has a duration of three years until 2010 and a total funding of about 32 million euro. It is co-funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the French Ministry of Economics, Finance and Industry, the Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems (VINNOVA), and by the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation (TEKES). The IHP part is funded by the BMBF.

Project Partners

100GET has 24 German, 3 French, 5 Swedish and 5 Finnish partners. IHP is closely cooperating in 100GET-E3 with CoreOptics GmbH, Nürnberg. IHP partners under subcontract are advICo GmbH, Fachhochschule Brandenburg and Humboldt University. Further cooperation is on the way.
