Investigations of special components for key circuits in wakeup receivers

Zielstellung

The main goal of Aeternitas is the development of concepts, prototypes, and demonstrators for ultra-low power wakeup receivers which improve the operation of energy-efficient sensor networks dramatically and pave the way for new application fields. Based on systems existing at Fraunhofer IIS, the range and addressability shall be improved whereas power consumption shall be minimized. Two project partners fix specifications according to realistic application scenarios. The wakeup receivers will be designed for the 868 MHz and 2.4 GHz ISM bands and later be produced with IHP’s cleanroom facilities. Furthermore an integrated wireless sensor node will be developed which integrates the main sensor node and the wakeup receiver. The setup and operation of a wireless multi-hop sensor network with distributed wakeup transmitters will be evaluated. Another focus lies on the security of wakeup systems which is protected against battery depletion attacks. Sensor networks with such low-power wakeup receivers could work over several years of lifetime and will open many new applications such as remote maintenance, condition monitoring, geo fencing and more.

Beitrag des IHP

The goal of our circuit design contribution is to investigate in topics such as special passive components such as SAW devices and integrated inductors with higher quality factor. Potential impacts of such devices on the performance of ultra-low power wakeup receivers are be evaluated. To support continuous operation of a wakup receiver we investigate voltage references under low voltage conditions. Designs will be processed in IHP’s mature 0.25µm SiGe technology and the 0.13µm technology as well.
