UWB Localization (DistCom/Distag)

Development of an UWB transceiver for high-precision indoor localization applications

The Objective

The goal of this project is to utilize the impulse radio UWB technique for data transmission as well as for high-precision indoor localization at the same time. For this purpose, an UWB transceiver is required, which serves as the heart of radio modules allowing a ranging accuracy in decimeter range. This kind of radio transmission is based extremely short impulses with duration of about 1 nanosecond. The frequency spectrum is chosen in the range of 6.0 to 8.5 GHz in accordance to the European regulation of UWB usage (ECC frequency mask). The DistCom modules are dedicated for wireless sensor applications in industrial and logistics environment. Therefore, ambitious requirements are determined in terms of robustness, latency, communication range, and ranging accuracy.


IHP’s Contribution

IHP is designing the RF subsystem including the IR-UWB receiver and transmitter chip. The transmitter generates RF impulses with an average repetition rate of 56.64 MHz deploying pulse position modulation and BPSK modulation. The receiver sensitivity is expected to be -70 dBm and a dynamic range for the RF input signal of at least 50 dB shall be achieved. An important feature of the chipset is the implementation of a time-of-flight measurement unit intended for localization applications. It allows the acquisition of a time stamp at the moment of the rising edge of a received impulse. The minimum step size of the time measurement is 275 picoseconds corresponding to a flight distance of about 8 centimeter. The chipset is manufactured in IHP's 0.25 µm low-cost SiGe:C BiCMOS technology SGB25V.
