IHP – Innovations for High Performance Microelectronics presented at the IEEE International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM) in San Francisco a scientific publication in the field of silicon photonics, which was developed together with IBM Zurich. The paper demonstrates for the first time the feasibility of integrating a novel high-speed electro-optic modulator within the backend of the silicon photonics foundry technology of IHP. The modulator exploits the Pockels effect (linear electro-optic effect), allowing for pure phase modulation of optical signals at high speed, a novelty so far not available on silicon photonics platforms. The paper is the result of a collaboration between IHP and IBM Zurich. The research collaboration was partially supported by the EU projects SITOGA and PHRESCO.
IEDM is the world’s preeminent forum for reporting technological breakthroughs in the areas of semiconductor and electronic device technology, design, manufacturing, physics, and modeling. In recent years, major advances in silicon photonics were reported at the conference.

The building and the infrastructure of the IHP were funded by the European Regional Development Fund of the European Union, funds of the Federal Government and also funds of the Federal State of Brandenburg.
