System Design Department

Which research project are you working on?

Currently, my main task consists of managing and coordinating the European "StrokeBack" research project ("Telemedicine system empowering stroke patients to fight back"). We are conducting the project in collaboration with three local partners in Brandenburg as well as with partners in England, Greece and Hungary. We are developing a telemedical system which will be able to support stroke patients during their out-patient rehabilitation phases at home. The aim of the system is to record and evaluate everyday activities and rehabilitation exercises so that patients are able to carry out their rehabilitation therapy on a regular basis, perhaps daily, and also regardless of whether a therapist is present or not. The system provides technical support only and enables stroke patients to achieve their rehabilitation goals independently and with the appropriate means.

Why did you choose to work at the IHP?

Frankfurt (Oder) is my home town, I grew up here. The IHP offers me a unique opportunity to stay in the city with my family while at the same time being able to carry out advanced research in a region such as Brandenburg. The atmosphere at the IHP is friendly and fair and I have ample opportunities to pursue my own ideas, aims and projects, both at regional and international level.

What are your career goals?

I would like to contribute to the development of my home region. Brandenburg is greatly affected by demographic change and is not well known as a high tech region either. Yet there are several companies - mostly SMEs - which have established a firm basis in the field of telemedicine and medical technology here and have attracted international attention. I believe that telemedicine can provide some of the solutions to the challenges, both present and future, posed by a sustainable and comprehensive provision of healthcare. My medium-term aim is to establish my own research group to study and develop technical innovations in telemedicine and the provision of healthcare, to a large extent with the involvement of local companies. I would like to strengthen regional activities and contribute to attracting and training urgently needed highly qualified staff.

The building and the infrastructure of the IHP were funded by the European Regional Development Fund of the European Union, funds of the Federal Government and also funds of the Federal State of Brandenburg.
