Fiber optic communication

The interface between the optical and the electrical domain in fiber-​optical communication systems is a special challenge while the demands on data rates increase. In order to ensure the interface is not the performance bottleneck, the optical and the electrical components need to become co-​designed. The Si-​photonic technology of IHP including SiGe-​HBTs and active and passive optical devices allows the development of EPIC single-​chip-solutions targeting maximum data rates and minimum power dissipation as required for instance in data centers.
