Technische Universität Dresden was founded in 1828 and is among Germany's oldest and most renowned universities of technology. The TUD is the largest university in the region, with more than 30 000 students and 4 500 employees, including about 600 professors. The sub-project "Basebandprocessing and RF-Frontend for a wireless high-speed data transmission system at 60 GHz" is performed in close cooperation of 2 chairs at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology.

The Chair for Circuit Design and Network Theory (CCN) has been established in August 2006 and is devoted to the design of high-speed integrated circuits using advanced circuit techniques and technologies. Applications mainly involve wireless communications up to 60 GHz and optical communications up to 40 GBit/s. The CCN incorporates the experience of 2 professors, 1 postdoc and project manager, 8 Ph.D. students and 2 technical staff members.

The CCN provides profound experiences and knowledge in the area of RF circuit design on CMOS, SiGe BiCMOS and GaAs MESFET technologies for frequencies up to 60 GHz.

The current focus of the Vodafone Chair Mobile Communications Systems (MCS) lies on the physical layer systems research including medium access problems, with a special emphasis on wireless radio network problems (capacity and planning), wireless modems (mobile terminals and base stations), and IC implementation architectures. Of particular interest are problems and solutions that are found in a trade-off between these focus areas. The chair was founded in September 1994 by an endowment of the Mannesmann Mobilfunk GmbH , Düsseldorf, Germany. Currently, 30 Ph.D. students work at the Vodafone Chair Mobile Communications Systems . They are involved in teaching as well as project work. The main areas of expertise are the relation of baseband and RF signal processing ("Dirty RF"), performance evaluation on system level, and IC design for digital communications.
