Sub-Project: Channel Measurements and Parameter Estimation for 60 GHz Broadband Links

The 60 GHz frequency range with bandwidths of many GHz is supposed to be made available for worldwide licence free radio transmission. A major advantage of this frequency range is the huge usable bandwidth. The design of new radio communication systems for these frequencies, especially the design of the radio air interface requires detailed knowledge of the radio channel.

MEDAV ´s part in EASY-A gives is based on real time radio channel measurements for typical application scenarios and areas. Basic channel parameters are extracted from measurement data. Basic channel parameters are the complex channel matrix in time and frequency domain including their statistics as well as their physical interpretation with respect to geometrical structure of propagation paths, time delays, polarization and path loss.

Measurement based realistic channel models are derived from the basic channel parameters. Further on various antenna configurations are examined as they have big impact on the given radio channel. Favourite antenna configurations are evaluated adhoc in the realistic area of application.

The MEDAV real time ultra-wide-band MIMO Channel Sounder is used, offering 2 TX and 4 RX channels. The Channel Sounder provides a real time measurement bandwidth of 7 GHz (3.5 … 10.5 GHz)

The new 60 GHz Up/Down-Converters and antennas, developed in EASY-A, are connected directly as front ends to the sounder. The miniaturisation of this technology approach compared to the standard 60 GHz frequency converters allows a reasonable application in a real “in-Vehicle area”. Furthermore the new 60 GHz front ends are validated in a real environment besides and independent of the EASY-A hardware demonstrators.
