The Clean Room

With the inauguration of the institute at its current location in 1999, a 1000 m² clean room was also put into operation. For 20 years, prototype solutions for central societal challenges have been developed in the pilot line using the institute's own powerful SiGe BiCMOS technologies. In order to create process possibilities for new strategic topics and to gain separate areas in the sense of an Exploratory Lab, as well as for the continuous modernization of the equipment park with uninterrupted operation, a higher demand for clean room space arose. For this reason, the technological heart of the IHP has been extended by half its size since 2018 in a construction period of only 2.5 years.

The 15.3 million euro project was supported by the Ministry of Science, Research and Culture of the State of Brandenburg (MWFK), the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the European Structural Fund (ERDF).

With the area extension of the DIN ISO 14644 certified clean room to a size of 1500 m², IHP opens up new possibilities for researching materials and technologies in order to maintain records such as the world's fastest silicon germanium transistor also in the future. The launch of the clean room extension will enable IHP to continue to set and contribute to technological benchmarks in the future. It is an investment in the future and an important contribution to microelectronics in Germany.
