The focus of the joint research activities should be on utilizing the SiGe BiCMOS transistor technologies of IHP to design and implement power amplifiers for next-generation radio systems in
communication, sensing and radar at frequencies above 100 GHz. A clear path towards the realization of >100-GHz power amplifiers, including their architecture and transistor-level design, will be sought,
which will ultimately enable state-of-the-art performance in output power, efficiency and linearity. Emphasis will be put on identifying optimum circuit topologies and implementation strategies that can make the best use of high-performance front-end and back-end offerings unique to IHP’s SiGe BiCMOS foundry. In addition, possible collaboration plans will be discussed to identify technology development directions for IHP’s SiGe, InP and hetero-integrations, which will push the performance limits of >100-GHz power amplifiers.
Overall, the joint research efforts are expected to significantly enhance the performance of future radio systems by enabling higher output power, higher efficiency and improved linearity.
The award winner must have a strong background in millimeter-wave power amplifiers in silicon and compound semiconductor technologies operating at frequencies above 100 GHz, demonstrating
record-breaking performance and innovative design approaches, targeted towards millimeter-wave radar, sensing and wireless communication applications. Research experience in integrated
transmitters and receivers at similar frequency bands is a plus. A strong drive towards connecting with interdisciplinary and international R&D networks which are currently laying the foundations of future systems is expected. IHP seeks to incorporate more women into the science field – therefore, women are strongly encouraged to apply.
We assume the selected fellow is able to stay at IHP for three months on a flexible time schedule in a timeframe of 12 months starting from the day of nomination. IHP was the first European semiconductor manufacturer to release an open-source Process Design Kit (PDK) in early 2023. Unlike the other two prominent open PDKs—Google/SkyWater’s 130nm CMOS and GlobalFoundries’ 180nm CMOS—the IHP PDK is based on a BiCMOS technology platform, featuring one of the fastest silicon-germanium (SiGe) heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs) currently available. This allows support for a wide range of applications, from digital and mixed-signal circuits to high-frequency designs reaching up to 100 GHz.
As a member of the Research & Prototyping Services group, you will play a key role in expanding open-source EDA tool support for innovative chip design projects. In the context of new heterogeneous and chiplet integration efforts, we are developing an ADK alongside open-source EDA tool interfaces. Your primary focus will be the integration of electromagnetic, thermal, and mechanical simulation tools—all open-source—into the ADK design flow, enabling advanced multi-technology and multi-die design environments.

RF/mm-Wave IC Designer (m/f/d)
IHP Solutions GmbH is a fully owned subsidiary of IHP – Leibniz Institute for High Performance Microelectronics. IHP Solutions is responsible for the transfer of know-how and IP from IHP to industrial partners. A strong focus lies in supporting customers in using the IHP SiGe-technology to design and produce their own customer-specific ASICs at IHP’s small volume foundry.
IHP Solutions is looking for a motivated RF/mm-Wave IC Designer, who will support the customer design requests.
The main responsibilities with this position are:
- Design and development of RF and mm-wave front-ends in BiCMOS and RF-CMOS technologies for state-of-the-art communication, radar and sensing systems
- Perform comprehensive simulations of the designs to ensure manufacturability of the final product
- Creation of layout and implementation
- Post layout parasitic extraction and final simulation before tape out
- Creating verification reports to document the simulation results
- Support the test team in understanding the product design in the development of hardware and software for testing in production
- Participate in the review of ATE data prior to product release
- Creation of qualification schemes
- Support qualification and product development in the qualification and transfer of new products to the IHP pilot line
- Participate in improving design quality, design flow and processes for successful first design and manufacturing quality (DFM)
- Technical contact for customers
- Present technical capabilities at conferences, trade shows and customer visits
The successful candidate possesses the following skills and experience:
- Completed studies in the field of electrical engineering or comparable subject areas
- Several years of experience in high-frequency analog IC design for at least one of the following application areas: RF and mm-wave front-ends, radar and sensor technology, optoelectronics
- 5+ years of experience with IC design tools (e.g. Keysight ADS or Cadence Virtuoso), including cell-level design and top-level verification tasks, including DRC, LVS, and metal density/slot rules, Electromagnetic simulation tools (EM tools) (e.g. EMX, Momentum, RF Pro, HFSS, CST)
- Layout knowledge at transistor level
- Understanding of layout effects (e.g. matching, reliability, proximity effects)
- Experience with schematic entry tools, physical layout and analog and mixed-signal simulation
- Knowledge of VerilogA/AMS is a plus

- Customer Management & Sales for Foundry Services (MPW, Engineering Runs, etc.), IP Blocks, and ASICs
- Identify key target customers and partners
- Strategic development of business relationships with key customers
- Lead of technology transfer and IP-development projects in close collaboration with the research teams of the IHP - Leibniz Institute and strategic partners
- Development of market analysis, go-to-market strategies, and other related documents for selected IPs and technology platforms
- Representing the company at tradeshows and technical conferences
The successful candidate possesses the following skills and experience:
