With the strategic competence field “Intelligent Edge Systems”, the IHP contributes to the feasibility of spatially distributed, self-learning, information-gathering and processing systems based on microelectronic solutions. The competence field “Intelligent Edge Systems” represents a strategic field of work for the IHP, in which holistic solutions are to be researched and created across the institute. In this context, the IHP is pursuing the following research priorities:
At the hardware level:
- intelligent processing and abstraction of data with AI and machine learning,
- energy-efficient neuromorphic hardware and in-memory computing,
- cross-system, seamless design methodology across all technological levels.
Such methods, architectures and technologies will form the basis for further investigations:
- intelligent, energy-efficient and high-performance sensory systems,
- optimized energy efficiency and latency times of edge systems,
- dynamic and intelligent adaptation of networks for a continuous, optimal operating point,
- resilience across all technological levels.
In the field of “Intelligent Edge Systems”, IHP sees important points of reference to the application domains of sensor technology, artificial intelligence, health and energy system transformation.
The backbone of the respective activities is related to the planned Research & Innovation Factory AI and Microelectronics in Cottbus. This activity is planned as a long-term strategic research and innovation investment that supports various related activities within different modules. The main focus is on intelligent edge/cloud systems, including the aspects of modern AI processing architectures, both in the digital and mixed-signal domains, scalability, and energy efficiency. Further activities include AI-driven methodology for CAD in chip design and manufacturing.
