Research Engineer
Research Engineer (m/f/d) for DevOps and Design Infrastructure
Job-ID: 3046/26 | Department: System Architecture | Working Time: 40h/week| Salary: E13 TV-L | Limitation: 2 years with option of extension | Entry Date: as soon as possible
The position:
We are looking for a technically skilled engineer to join the System Architectures Department as our in-house interface to the central IT infrastructure. You will be responsible for setting up, maintaining, and operating the full technical stack our research and development work depends on — from bare-metal servers and EDA tool environments to design flows and compute cluster management. The goal is to ensure our teams get what they need, when they need it.
Beyond operations, you will help us turn our hardware development infrastructure into a living data source. By extracting, structuring, and processing data from our design flows and tools, you will enable real-time insight into our development processes — an area with genuine research potential and the possibility of contributing to publications. As our in-house DevOps engineer, you will build and operate the technical foundation our hardware development teams rely on:- Setup and administration of servers, operating systems, and virtualization environments
- EDA tool and HW development flow management, including license administration
- Repository management and CI/CD pipelines for hardware and software IP
- AI compute cluster management, including resource allocation and user access
Beyond infrastructure operations, you will help us make our design data actionable. This includes extracting, structuring, and processing data from our development flows and tools so that we can monitor, analyze, and act on it in real time:
- Data governance, modeling, and IP inventory management
- Database setup and maintenance for design and flow data
- Metadata enrichment and data pipeline development
- Evaluation of tools and frameworks for data management and visualization
- Development of internal dashboards and interfaces for live monitoring of infrastructure and design flows
Your qualifications:
You hold a Master's degree in Computer Science, IT Engineering, or a related field. You have solid experience in Linux system administration and DevOps practices, including version control, CI/CD tooling, and containerization. A structured approach to data management and documentation is expected. Familiarity with EDA or hardware development environments is a strong plus. Experience with databases, data pipelines, or visualization tools is beneficial. You enjoy working closely with research and engineering teams and take ownership of the infrastructure they rely on.
You will also be a strong team player. We are looking for a team member who can structure their own work and bring a well-organized and systematic approach to working with creative minds. You will be an ideal fit for this position if you have experimental, analytical, and problem-solving skills, very strong communication skills, and the ability to quickly learn how to use the latest technical equipment, including various software. You must be fluent in English. German language skills are welcome. Further development of German language skills is expected and strongly encouraged, e.g. through in-house language courses and intensive courses. -

Developer
Developer for Open Source Assembling Design Kit for IHP Hetero- and ChipletIntegration (m/w/d)
Job-ID: 70913/26 |Dept.: Technology |Salary: according TV-L |Working time: 40h/week |Limitation: initially 2 years with option of extension |Entry Date: as soon as possible
The position:
IHP is the first European semiconductor manufacturer to introduce an open PDK in early 2023. Compared to the other two open PDKs (Google/SkyWater 130nm CMOS and GlobalFoundries 180nm CMOS), the IHP process is a BiCMOS technology that incorporates one of the fastest SiGe HBTs (heterojunction bipolar transistors). As a result, this open-source PDK is capable of supporting digital and mixed-signal designs, as well as high-frequency designs for future applications up to 100GHz.
As a member of the Research & Prototyping Service group, you will be directly involved in the development of open source EDA tool support for our design projects. In the context of new heterogeneous and chiplet integration efforts, we are developing an ADK alongside open-source EDA tool interfaces. Your primary focus will be the integration of electromagnetic, thermal, and mechanical simulation tools—all open-source—into the ADK design flow, enabling advanced multi-technology and multi-die design environments.
In addition to working with open source tools, proprietary tools will also be considered throughout the design flow.
Your profile:
You hold a Master's degree in physics, electrical engineering, or computer science and bring knowledge in semiconductor technology and devices, as well as experience in IC design and programming. Specialized expertise in packaging techniques, device simulation, and modeling is highly desirable. You are proficient with Linux, GitHub, and scripting languages such as Python. Experiences in Perl or Tcl will be considered as additional qualification.
Experiences with at least one IC layout tool (e.g., KLayout, Magic, Cadence, Synopsys, or Siemens EDA) and at least one PCB layout tool (e.g., KiCad, Altium, or similar) will be highly valued. You are expected in developing open-source tools to contributions to open source projects.
You are organized, capable of managing multiple projects in parallel, and maintain a clear overview in dynamic settings. With strong communication skills, you serve as a reliable and engaging contact for partners and collaborators.
You are also a strong team player. We are looking for a team member, who is able to structure his or her own work and to bring a well-organized and systematic way of working into the cooperation with creative minds. You are an ideal match for this position, when you have experimental, analytical and problem-solving skills, very strong communicative skills and the ability to quickly learn how to operate the latest technical equipment including various software. It is necessary that you confidently handle the English language. Knowledge of the German language is welcome.
