VIOLET

The goal of the project "Fully Integrated Optically-Locked Electronic Transmitter" (VIOLET) is to efficiently convert an optical data signal transmitted through an optical fiber into an RF signal transmitted using an antenna. The optical-to-RF signal conversion is performed on a single chip using optical synchronization and at data rates exceeding 10 Gbit/s. The radiation takes place in the IEEE W-band around 100 GHz and thus offers the possibility to integrate the antenna on the same chip. The transmitter is synchronized with an optical signal using the principle of injection locking. The resulting reduction in phase noise allows energy to be saved during transmission. Thanks to its suitability for mass production, the solution will be more cost-effective and reliable - compared to alternative solutions - and will consist of a single microchip containing all the necessary functions.
